Count eligible containers only
The BCRS deposit is €0.10 for an eligible single-use beverage container. The scheme covers specified drinks in steel or aluminium cans and glass or PET bottles between 0.1 and 3 litres. Material and size alone do not establish eligibility: the beverage and registered product matter too.
Check the product through the operator’s scheme information before including it. Reusable bottles and other packaging should not be treated as refundable simply because they look similar.
Deposits paid, money recovered
The refund repays a deposit that was charged earlier. If you buy 60 eligible containers and return 45, the calculation separates the recovered deposit from the amount still outstanding.
60 eligible containers bought, 45 returned
- Deposits paid: 60 × €0.10 = €6.
- Refund recovered: 45 × €0.10 = €4.50.
- Deposit on 15 unreturned containers: €1.50.
Make the count useful at home
Choose one period, such as a week or a month. Count eligible containers bought and those actually returned during that period. A stock of empties carried over from last month can make this month’s refunds larger than this month’s deposits.
For a simple snapshot, use the calculator for the containers waiting to be returned. A household with 37 eligible containers has a potential deposit recovery of €3.70, subject to their acceptance by the scheme. That is different from saying the household has saved €3.70 on the drinks themselves.
Record the refund once
If grocery spending includes the deposit, subtract the refund when it is redeemed. If your budget excludes deposits from the start, do not also subtract the refund. Either method can work if you apply it consistently.
Keep any cost of a dedicated return trip in mind. Combining returns with an existing shopping trip avoids treating the full refund as a net saving when you have made an extra drive to obtain it.
